Hello all

I belong to this group of people that reformatted a hard drive and decided to re-install Mac OS 9. I have a dual 1.25Ghz MDD G4, and it is the non-FW800 one which I bought to carry on using my ProTools Mix Plus system in both OS 9 and OS X. But unfortunately I bought this mac without its original installation disks...

As I had purchased OS 9.1 for my previous G4, and had downloaded the 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 updates, I thought that I would be alright, but no...things have to be a wee more complicated. Anyhow, without pulling a long face I tried to search for the solution and apparently the problem lies with the Mac Boot Rom. It seems that ROM 9.5.1 (or above) is necessary for the mac to start up.

Could anyone please confirm if that is true?

Many thanks to all

Here's a suggestion:

Install OS 9.1 on an external firewire HD (cheap enough to put together nowadays, if you don't already have one.) Be sure the OS 9 drivers are installed on the firewire HD. Install the 9.2.2 update, startup off that HD attached via firewire to your MDD. Copy the System Folder over. You may have to re-bless the System Folder on your MDD, as follows:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=18611

Using the Startup Disk Control Panel, select the MDD and startup.

Or use eBay to find a compatible 9.2.2 startup disk.

Check with an Apple Authorized Service Provider, they can order the missing original startup disks.
