I've been reading the threads here to understand what's the best way to upgrade my Mac Pro memory but I wanted to make sure I'm correct.

I have the Mac Pro Dual Core (2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon). I currently have 2GB of memory. According to System Profiler, it looks like I have 4 512MB FB-DIMMs. Two on riser A and two on riser B.

I think I would like to upgrade to 8GB of memory.

Is the best solution to buy two of Crucial's 4GB kits?

If I understand it correctly, that gives me four 2 GB FB-DIMMs and I could put two on riser A and two on riser B for the optimal performance.

I assume the other option is just go with 6GB of memory and put the new DIMMs from the 4GB kit in where the current DIMMs are and then move the current DIMMs to the empty slots. Based on what I've read, that results in a small performance hit though?

Thanks!

You can get the same ram for $139.00 from here... http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Mac-Pro-Memory .
Put the larger memory modules toward the mother board. I would get rid of the 512mb sticks and put 1gb modules if you can. I currently run 8gb (8X1) in my mac pro.

You're probably better off with more memory even with the marginal latency hit. Put 2GB on the two slots closest to the logic board of each riser and 512MB on the other two slots in each riser for a total of 10GB.
