I'm hoping this will be a quick fix, however the instructions on the apple site seem weird.

It seems to amount to no more than unplugging the Mac from all cables, waiting 15 seconds and plugging it all back in before restarting.

Can this be right?

Sounds essentially the same as doing a portable (without needing to hold the power button), so yes.

Yeah, that's how desktop smc resets work.
