OK so resetting the smc hasn't worked (damn!)

The screen had been failing to come on, then flicking on, then off again. Now it's permanently off. The Mac works fine and attaching an external display works a treat.

So I guess it's either the converter board or the backlight, although there is absolutely NO image, not even a very faint one which I would expect to see if it was the backlight so I'm guessing the inverter board.

Any other guesses?

There's no faint image?

If it were the inverter, there should at least be a faint image, so that's odd. In what way has it been flickering? Light to dark or bright on/off?

from on to completely off. Then working again. Not in quick succession but intermittently until now it's off all the time.

I thought it wouild show a faint image if the backlight were gone not the inverter.

I've been trying a firmware reset but no joy therte either. if I hold the power button down I don't get the three short/lonh flashes just a number of very fast flashes and then a high pitched tone, followed by the restart chime.
