Wierd, my iMac has suddenly decided to permanently display the sound level icon in the middle of the screen. Worse than that, everytime I try to turn up the volume using either the keyboard or System Preferences/Output Volume, it automatically resets to mute.

Anyone else had this problem? How did you sort it out?

Thanks,

Tim

Which iMac do you have? Processor speed and screen size. Then: what version of OS X are you running?

Also: you can't make that sound symbol go away, it's permanently there?

I had a weird thing on my now old, now sold iMac G5: sometimes it would set the balance for the sound to all the way to the left, and at the same time not play DVDs. I did a system re-install.

But, before you do that, provide us with more details about your set-up.

Veltliner - thanks for your attempt to help - the problem actually went of its own accord. Very strange!

Most likely the mute key on your keyboard was stuck, either physically or through a short in the keyboard - happens when you spill something. Attempt to clean the keyboard if it comes up again.

Good to hear that you have gotten one of those iMacs that can repair itself...

I've replaced the keyboard and the same thing continues to happen. It is even there when there is no keyboard attached. It is always in the "mute" display mode. If you press the "louder" key, then it will automatically reduce back to muted. I tested the original keyboard on another Mac and it works fine.

Totally bizarre.

Does the muted symbol have the below symbol over it? Is there a red light shining out of your audio port?
