I recently got a 733MHz PowerMac G4, and discovered the silly 128GB barrier when I installed my extra 200GB hard drive in it. I have a Maxtor controller card, but it appears to not work. At all. Disk Utility won't even see the hard drive.
So now I'm looking for a new one. Is there a particular brand or specification I should look for? I don't really want to spend a lot of money, but I don't want to get the cheap $12 card on NewEgg if it's not going to work.

You need a card that comes with drivers for OS X... which generally triples the price. This ($55) is the only one I see at Newegg, but it's out of stock. OWC has it in stock with their usual 30% markup.

How do I install the drivers once I have a compatible card?
With Windows (at least XP), you have to install the drivers during the OS installation (before you get to actually installing Windows). Does OS X require something similar?
It sounds like I may be better off getting that $15 software from Intech...

Some people talk about installing the drivers before the hardware, but I don't see that it would be an issue. The drivers are usually kext files (kernel extensions) and the new hardware won't be recognized until the drivers are in place. After which the hardware will recognize (usually after a reboot) and all will be well.

Yeah, I'm not going to spend $50 on a controller card for a $66 computer. I'll just get a copy of the SpeedTools Hi-Cap driver and use that to access the additional space.

If you were going to use a PCI card for larger hard drives, you'd usually have a smaller drive just for the OS attached to the logic board. But I agree it doesn't make sense to sink that much money into your boat anchor.
