I accidently kicked a cup and spilled coffee into my mac pro. the fan got really loud and the screen went black. I immediately shut it off and unplugged it. I opened up the side and it doesn't really look too bad. I think it just got on the motherboard in the center part. Is there any way this could have affected the data on my hard drives? Is it possible for techs to repair the motherboard in this case, or is it usually a definate replacement situation? I'm taking it in for service in a couple days but it would really put my mind at ease if I thought my data was safe as I haven't backed all of it up. Like I said, when I looked inside, it didn't look that bad. but still, I think the motherboard could be fried.

Thanks

Andy

It should not have harmed the drives. They're self-contained and sealed.

You're data is fine. Unless it splattered up and ruined the electronics on the hard drives in which the hard drives might need data recovery. Chances of that is pretty unlikely though.

A motherboard replacement is gonna be pretty pricey... probably $600-$800 or so.

Hi there, I'm a Mac engineer and I agree - the board won't be fixed it'll be swapped out by Apple, data should be fine with no trouble. expect a hefty price for a replacement logic board though. Best thing to do at this stage is to take your HD's out and shove them in another MacPro if you've got access to one and back the data up before you take it in. Sounds just like the logic board to me unless you frazzled the psu as well.

totally off-topic and not wishing to derail the thread

hey 'catalonia', welcome to the boards. I wonder… no option to learn catalá online? There are more and more catalonians over here (not me but friends)

Let it dry out for a few days just in case (make sure it is unplugged.) Then try to boot it up.

If you left it plugged into power for an extended period after the spill or tried to boot it up after the spill, it is very likely you need a new board.

I hope your Mac Pro boots up after drying it out.
