I just heard that Nvidia is dropping prices on Video Cards. I was wondering if the Nvidia GT 8800 is compatible with the 2 X 2.66 GHZ Dual-Core Intel Xeon? This is the original Mac Pro. I know it will work in the quad core mac pro but not sure about the one I have. I'm on my second ATI Radeon X1900 XT card. The first, and now the current one, in the above computer die a slow death due to overheating when playing games like WOW. I don't want to repeat this a third time even though the computer is still under Apple Care for a couple more months.

Thanks,
Lou

There are two different versions of the 8800GT card. One is for the models released in January 2008, another is for all previous versions (like yours).

For gaming, this is the card to go with. If you want a card that's also really good for Core Image apps, go for the cheaper ATI 3780 (or is it 3870?).

I don't think I've ever seen Apple drop the price on an upgrade-marketed graphics card.

FYI:

I just called in my second issue with an ATI X1900XT card to Applecare, after receiving a DIY "revision 2 X1900XT " replacement a few months ago that was also failing.

They would only offer a replacement card that was available when I purchased my MP in 2006. I said that the lower level card was NOT an option. They then offered me the nVidia Quadro 4500 as replacement. Works wonderfully and solved other graphics issues that I thought were due to my bargain 22" LCD.
