I'm waiting for Core i7 to come to the Mac Pro before buying, and I've also noticed more dead pixels on my 22" Acer, so I was thinking / wondering if the new Apple LED Cinema Display could be hooked up to a Mac Pro, or is it really only for the latest laptops. I quite like the idea of having some extra USB ports near me and the keyboard since the MacPro will probably be out of site, tucked away.

I think that the Mac Pros will get a refresh in January, and will incorporate the Display Port connector, and I think that there might be a 30" announced.

No, the current Mac Pros only support ACDs that were released before they were.

Since you say you will be getting a new MP you should have a good chance at getting that 24" LEC hooked up to it. In all likelihood the new MPs will make use of DP. I also agree wth others that that's when we'll likely see a new 30".
For older MPs it's not quite clear what will happen. Either the screen supports DVI passthrough and all we need are appropriate adapters (DVI->MDP) or they'll need a new graphics card. I consider the former less likely. The graphics card on the new MPs will likely come with DP and will either work in older MPs or there will (eventually) be a version made for older MPs. Plug one of those into your older MP and you can use a new LED display.

it would be nice if apple would give a discount to earlier mp buyers on the new graphics card with the purchase of a new CD. doubtful though

Nice idea, but yeah, doubtful.
On the bright side, you can get a MP graphics card for $129. Assuming the cheapest MP DP graphics card will be the same, you're looking at an added 14% cost to the 24" display to run it on your old MP. With the 30" display it will be less. Of course if you don't want the base card it will be more expensive. Sure it's a bummer, but it looks like that's roughly the price to pay for transition to a new display interface.
I have always wanted a second auxiliary input on Apple' displays. This time around would have been an excellent opportunity to do so. If they added a DVI input in addition to the MDP input, none of this would have been an issue. Sure that adds to the cost of Apple's displays, but honestly, they're not exactly cheap. And I think a second input isn't that much to ask for. Oh well.

true, but since they are already investing in the CD they should get at least somewhat of a break on the card. But most pro users that can afford to upgrade their CD probably can drop some ching on the card

You reckon that they'll get the Corei7 CPU for Jan? Hope you're right, but I can't see it being that fast.
While I'd love a 30" display with the same functionality as the new 24" LED, the total price is probably more than I've budgeted. The 24" is 849€ here in France, a 30" would probably be over 1200€.

I was in an apple store yesterday and was asking if i bought a 24" LCD what the chances were that 3 weeks after I got it, apple says: "hey heres a 30 inch option". He said i will be right back i have to ask someone something.
He came back and told me that no one really knows about it, but they have 4 or 5 30" new style LCDs and he could sell me one right then. They are $1799.
I didnt get it, still trying to decide if i need a mac pro and am waiting, and id probably get 2 24" instead of 1 30" since the difference in $ is not much.

They had them in stock and was willing to let you walk out with one today?

Yeah, right. If new models were released, we'd know about it. And if an Apple Store employee blabbed about unreleased product (which is extremely difficult anyway, since even employees don't find out in advance), they'd be jobless now.

Go back, ask to see the box, and snap some pics with your cell phone. You'll be an Internet hero.

The guy took you for a ride. They don't have new models so far in advance. When new stuff comes in a day or two early it's sealed. They can't sell it and can't talk about it. This guy doesn't seem to like keeping his job.

Very few things even come in a day or two early -- usually, new stuff is overnighted to the store so it arrives the same day as the announcement, or later.

He probably got confused and offered you the 30" Apple Cinema HD Display. He should be certain about what the client is asking and what they've got in the store, or he may start unwanted rumors (like this one).
