Hey, guys -

I'm trying to put together a Mac Pro to use as a video production rig at work. This is uncharted territory for my firm, and cost is an issue. Do you think SAS drives are worth the jump in price? Would we be better served setting up a RAID with two SATA drives? Thanks!

Well, there is no way to answer this question with this little information: for example, if you have to save on other things, because you invest your money in a faster harddrive, you may decrease your productivity (for instance, because you cannot afford a second screen). (You don't want to optimize `speed', but rather productivity.)

So what's the budget? And what kind of machine did you think of? What about color accuracy? What kind of projects will you be dealing with?

We'll be doing rapid-response YouTube videos, so our end product will rely more on message than high production value. Speed and message will be key. We are getting a second monitor. The SAS drives are in our budget. I'm just wondering if the cost is justified by performance improvement.

If you're doing only youtube videos, I doubt it (at least that doesn't sound like hardcore FC Pro-usage to me). I'd just get the Mac Pro without SAS drives (which require Apple's RAID card) and then see if you actually need more harddrive performance.

Although SAS drives are have larger data transfer rates and quicker seek times, if the other harddrives are fast enough to deliver video material, you might not even see any improvement.

You can also improve harddrive performance for very little money: get a second SATA harddrive (~ $100 or so vs. practically ten times that much (SAS harddrive + RAID controller)) and use that as a scratch drive for Final Cut.

Buy a pair of SATA drives and run RAID1. For youtube you probably won't see a much performance benefit from 15k drives, but for rapid response you want availability.

You're saying use the RAID card, right? Hardware RAID?

Not necessarily, you can use OS X' software RAID for that, too.

Yes, with the hardware RAID card.
