Help! I can't figure out how to have my HD icon show on my desktop. It's always been there, and all of a sudden it's gone. I don't know what I did.

I've tried restarting it and it still isn't there.

Here's what I'm running:
Apple iMac, G4, 800MHz, SD RAM 1 GB, 80 GB HD, CD-RW/DVD-R superdrive, OSX 10.4.11

In the Finder, Finder menu -> Preferences -> General.

Enable the viewing of drives on the desktop.

I already had it checked. So I unchecked it, closed, reopened and it still isn't there. But thanks for trying!

Perhaps it's moved off-screen, somehow. Try View->Clean Up, which will rearrange your icons.

Is the finder running? If you quit the finder, the icons on the desktop will disappear.

You can also try changing screen resolution back and forth. If it's offscreen, that should move it back.

Most likely the drive has indeed been moved off screen. The easiest fix is to open the Computer folder (use the Finder's Go menu) and just drag the HD icon you want to the desktop. That should make an alias of the drive on your desktop (hold command-option when dragging if you get some sort of error without it). Possibly you will have more than one icon on screen once the problem repairs itself, but I guess you can live with that.
