Hi there,

My rev. A Mac Pro kernel panics when booting from the retail (not system-specific) DVD of Leopard. It doesn't kernel panic any time else.

Usually this indicates a hardware problem; could this be true in this case too?
If so, how do I diagnose further?

What other info do you need?

thanks!

It could be the DVD. Try booting another Mac with the same DVD.

Run Apple Hardware Test (boot from the install DVD, hold d).

Does it report any errors?

Have you replaced the Mac Pro GPU with a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT?, if so, that's the reason, cause the 8800 GT needs 10.5.2 as minimum.

That's what I was thinking it probably could be. The only reason an otherwise properly functioning Mac would KP on boot with an OS X disc would be if an essential driver wasn't there or malfunctioned.

If you take the retail DVD & box into an Apple Store, they may replace it for free. They did for my brother when he couldn't get his 10.5.0 DVD to work on a Mac Pro.

i agree, perhaps using a 10.5.6 disc would work. for example, unibody macbook pros do not boot from the 10.5.0 disc but do from 10.5.6
