Not according to online spec, but has anyone been able to record onto DVD-R's directly or through iDVD ?

Optical drive with 2.4x Dual Layer burn (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

I note DVD-RW's are OK. (DVD±RW)

There is a good offer on DVD-R discs at the moment in the UK 17p per disc.
(Verbatim 43549 DVD-R 16x 4.7GB 100pk )

I currently use DVD+R's with no probs.

Not sure exactly what the question is, but of course DVD-Rs should burn fine. DVD-R is, in general, more compatible with more DVD players than DVD+R. DVD-R is all I use.

Not sure what Mac model you have, but every DVD-burning Mac supports DVD-R.

Here's the current iMac optical drive specs:

Optical drive

Slot-loading 8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
  • Writes DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL discs at up to 4x speed
  • Writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 8x speed
  • Writes DVD-RW discs at up to 6x speed and DVD+RW discs at up to 8x speed
  • Reads DVDs at up to 8x speed
  • Writes CD-R discs at up to 24x speed
  • Writes CD-RW discs at up to 16x speed
  • Reads CDs at up to 24x speed
(emphasis mine)

It's in my sig. It's the previous model witn non-reflective screen, white surround.

I'm hoping for someone that's actually done it, rather than quoted specs, thanks

Mine only quotes Optical drive with 2.4x Dual Layer burn (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

ie DVD+R

I'm not sure how much more proof you need. DVD-R was around before DVD+R and a dual layer Superdrive can burn to any DVD media that exists. It will work.

I have done this -- that is, burn DVD-R disks, both data as well as movie/video disks, on the computers listed in my signature. I have not done movies on DVD-RW disks, only on DVD-R in fact, but I've done data disks on both kinds.

For a while only DVD-Rs and DVD-RW burning was supported on Macs.

As I said: all Macs with DVD burners can burn to DVD-R. Support for other blank DVD formats didn't come till later.
