I love the monitor on my 24 inch iMac but it's too freaking BRIGHT especially in the morning or at night. The brightness control on the keyboard and in the system prefs only brings it down from insanely bright to waywayway too bright. Why can't it be like a MacBook brightness control that turns it all the way down and then even turns the backlight off if you keep going? I would LOVE to be able to turn the monitor off like that!

I use utilities like Shades and Dark Adapted to modify the gamma and simulate the brightness control I want but the light is still on full blast behind the screen so in the dark it just washes it out more than dims the screen when I crank it all the way down. I also found a little utility that sleeps the monitor but it wakes back up sometimes. Can anyone make the MacBook's brightness control work with the iMac or hack something up to allow ours to really do the trick? I can't be the only one!

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

You shut off the screen by pressing shift-ctrl-eject.

That is pretty nice but I'm really looking for the backlight to dim way down (more than the image in front of it being darkened). That's GOT to be possible
