I have several iMac-White with 10.3 and want to install 10.4 that have dead cd-rom's.

Is there any way to load the OSX.4 without the cd-rom ?

Thx, C4U

You should be able to do it via target disk mode, but this still requires a computer with a functioning optical drive.

Are your CD's dead or the CD-ROM drive on the iMac?

The iMac's have CDROM's that will not read the CD's. Its a major job to replace the CDROM having to tear apart the computer to get to the CDROM cage. I was wondering if there was any other options out there to load the OS?

Probably, will end up having to tear the iMacs down anyway, just trying to avoid it if possible.

How does one do it via target disk? I have access to other machines that could be the donor. Not familiar how to do so?

Thx, C4U

Start up the other machine in target drive mode (hold down the T key on startup.) When you get the FireWire logo on your screen, connect the two machines together with a FireWire cable, and insert the Tiger CD into the machine that's in target mode. The iMac should be able to boot from it then (hold down the option key on the iMac as you turn it on to select the boot disk.)

Alternately, put the machine with the bad drive in target disk mode by holding down T until you see the symbol, and boot the working machine from the 10.4 CD by holding down the C key on startup. The drive from the computer in target disk mode should show up as a valid install location.

Thanks a bunch guys, appreciate the support.

I will try to load via Target drive mode using the Fire Wire cable.
