I currently have a white iMac 23 inch 2.16 Core Duo, of which would like to upgrade the processor. First, is it cost effective? Second, what are the processor options for an upgrade. Any advice would be great as i'm not sure what the best course of action is. Thanks

Upgrading a CPU in general is not cost effective. I'd say sell the iMac on ebay/craigslist and take the proceeds of that sale and buy a new iMac.

If you want to do it, you need a Socket M Core 2 Duo (ie, the ones with a 667 MHz FSB).
The low-end Mac Pro is the most overpriced Mac since the IIvx
