I really want one of the new minis because at long last, Apple finally saw fit to put a real GPU in one of these. (took them long enough)
I wonder though, Apple sells two stock models, one of them mentions 128MB of shared Vram or 256MB of shared Vram. I'm guessing that there's some firmware or software switch to toggle how much Vram is allocated at startup, but how is this done? Where's the magic? If I get a stock model that's cheaper and is set to 128MB, could I hack it to 256 or more somehow?

Cheers

Memory available to Mac OS X may vary depending on graphics needs. Minimum graphics memory usage is 128MB for 1GB configuration and 256MB for 2GB configuration.
It depends how much RAM you put in it.

The system allocates 256MB for the GPU if the system has 2gig of ram, and only 128MB if 1 Gig of ram is installed. This is done automatically, no magic, no firmware setting and no way to really alter this setting.

That's very interesting....are there any white papers or articles that can be referenced to back that up? I mean it makes sense, I just like to be sure.

If I give the mini 4GB of ram, would it allocate 512MB for the shared Vram?

thanks again

Maximum of 256mb even if you install up to 4gb memory. And you get 256mb on either version of the new Mac Mini, as long as it has at least 2gb of memory.

Apple published it themselves. Right on their Mac mini spec page.

No. 256MB is the max.
