Hi all, I have a iMac G3 with 400MhZ, 40 gb HD, 512 Mb ram. Since I'll soon be working with a new Hard drive I wondered if it would be possible to run the latest os X on it, leopard. Is it possible?
And if not, where could I find old os versions?
thanks

F*ck, I discovered it requires an Intel-processor, which is obvious not on my g3 .
I discovered that "tiger" must be able to run smoothly. Where can I still buy it?

The minimum processor requirements for Leopard are a G4 running at 887MHz or greater, not intel. You are still out of luck with your G3 though, by some margin. It is possible to hack Leopard to run on slower G4's but you wouldn't want to.

Your iMac will run 10.4 just fine, but better with more ram. You do need firewire to install it, the installer checks to see if your Mac has Firewire. Again, you can get round this by removing your iMacs hard drive and installing the OS and then reinstalling the drive. Your iMac should have firewire though so no problem.

You can only get 10.4 from ebay/craigslist or similar now. Expect to pay a lot for it, more than the retail price of Leopard and then some. It's an in demand OS due to the large number of Macs that won't run Leopard.
