I have a brand new iMac 24-inch for all of five days and I can't get past the grey screen with the apple and the circle thingy. I tried a bunch of the boot keys and it hasn't worked. It's just hung up. I've read that the 24-inch has been tons of problems with freezing, but I couldn't find anything about hang-ups.

I can't even get the thing to boot to disk. I'm at a loss. I tried uplugging everything for thirty seconds. It didn't work either. Annoying as all get out. Especially since problems with Mac do not just occur during regular business hours. No, they happen when I am at home where I can work on it and apple support is closed! What's the use of buying applecare if there isn't anyone to help you? Grrrr!

If this is the route that Apple is taking...my mac love is being severely tested. I have no problems with my past macbooks. This is sad. Very sad.

Can you boot it form the install DVD?

Have you tried running Apple Hardware Test (boot from the install DVD while holding d)? Does it report any errors?

You got a lemon. It happens. You shouldn't have that experience. I'd just take it to an Apple store and get it fixed or replaced.

So it never booted properly? Ever? That would be a lemon.

If it booted up properly at first and then at some point stopped, it's rather because of something that has happened in the meantime. Probably software-related, IOW it can be fixed w/o sending in your Mac.
