I have the newest 24-inch iMac and use 10.5.6. Recently I have been unable to change the display's brightness from the F keys. Instead, I must go to system preferences and change it there. Yet the two keys do work for bringing the Mac out of sleep.
Additional Info: From the beginning, the brightness has always reset itself to the highest level whenever I turn on my Mac, even though I may have manually dimmed it before previously switching it off. This has been annoying, but I have got used to living with it. My previous G5 iMac would retain the brightness level I last used when restarting. So I'm wondering if this might have something to do with the sudden failure of the brightness control keys?

1. Go into System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard tab. Make sure to uncheck the option "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys."
2. For the brightness setting, go to Displays (also in system prefs) and uncheck "automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes."
Let us know if neither of these help with your issues, because there are other troubleshooting things we can try.

Apologies! I now know the reason for the problem above. I was having problems with my wireless keyboard and plugged in Apple's USB keyboard. After I fixed my problem I didn't remove the USB keyboard. When I did, the brightness control returned to my wireless keyboard. Hope this finding helps somebody else. But if anyone can tell me how to retain my manually adjusted brightness after I switch off the Mac, that would be great.

Quick Warrior--I tried your No. 2 suggestion. I went to Displays but cannot find "automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes" either under Display or Color.

Maybe it's just a feature on the Mac notebooks then.

No, it's there on my iMac. But I have the full-size aluminum keyboard, and the new iMacs come with the "compact" one. That could be why Yokohama doesn't have the "use all F keys as regular function keys" option box.

ghporter, thanks for the clarification. I'm using my Apple full-sized wireless keyboard that I bought around 6 years ago with one of the first LCD iMacs. I don't like the new crimped wired keyboard that comes with the new iMac. I wonder why the feature doesn't work with this wireless board given it has the full layout and it is an Apple product--if old one? Or is this the case with all wireless keyboards?

To my knowledge wireless keyboards work just fine with iMacs. It could be, however, that the keyboard you have isn't supported by the regular driver. Since I don't have any wireless keyboards (and only one wireless mouse that I use with my MBP), I really can't say why a wireless keyboard would give you problems, nor where to look for a driver for it.
