I have an 2008 8 Core 2.8Ghz MacPro with 4x1TB Hard drives and 24GB of ram. I take everything out (HDDS, GPUS, covers, front fans, and Optical drive bay) about once every 6 months to clean it and get any dust or debri out.

I have ALWAYS washed off the front fans (the big housing with two fans and with the electric connection attached to the housing). Before anyone new says..."you killed it with water"....NO, you can wet down JUST ABOUT anything electrical as long as there is no power going to it and it's dry before power is added back to it. Well I waited the normal 4 hours under a lamp to let it dry like I always have for the past year and a half.

This time when I put it back together (everything works fine the temp is around 29-30), but the fans are pulsing...eg. They will power on....get full speed and turn off after about 3 minutes use (i use SMC Fan Control so they shouldn't do this, they should run all the time). While they are on I can hear them loose speed and then come back up.

IMPO, It sounds like I might have knocked a wire of some sort slightly loose and the fans torque kicking on and off is causing it to jerk it maybe and then turn off and right back on....

I'm not a "No0b", I've been building PC's and Linux machines for over 13 years. My only thing is that with this Mac Pro (which is the first Mac I've owned...lol, now all of my main computers are Apple products). I can't find a schematic anywhere for the MacPro to check the wires.

Does anyone with more experience with the insides of a MacPro have any idea as to why the front fans only are doing what they are doing? I've been thinking about pulling the fan unit out of my MacPro I have at my office (I own my own IT company, but deal with business class servers and Windows machines.....not Macs. Plus I haven't really used any of my work resources to find any answers because after 2 years with no vacation and working alot of weekends I've taken two weeks off and I get a nightly text or email with the daily reports and I really don't wan to get involved with back with my company until I go back because I will get hounded and I feel it will undermine my guy I left in charge)

So....any help?

Well. Personally it sounds silly to me to wash down a $2,500+ Mac with something that electricity doesn't mix with on a bi-yearly basis. My guess is water eventually seeped in and caused a short.
