This is rather a basic question, but how do I find the IP address of my computer?

Thanks

Couple of ways:

System Profiler/Network or
System Preferences/Network

Both display your Mac's IP address.

Alternative you can open up Terminal and type ifconfig

Look for en0, and there's a section marked inet. Next to that is your IP address.

en0: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULT ICAST> mtu 1500
inet6 fe80::223:32ff:fe91:7b1a%en0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x4
inet 10.57.5.104 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 10.57.5.255

ah, sorry, I had misread your post… well, there is also a small and free app aimed to connect to local computer via ScreenSharing but it may help you since it shows the IP of any given computer in your local network.

ScreenSharingMenulet
