Hi all.
I'm in possession of a mac pro 2x 2.8ghz intel quad core running leopard. I have a main hardrive and a secondary harddrive. I was attempting to reformat the first hd and reinstall leopard. I pop in the cd as I have with many other systems, click the install startup and reboot, after about 4 minutes of waiting I see the black screen drop and it asks me to restart my comp, presumably a kernel panic error. I've done this with two different hd's to rule out it being an hd problem. I've also procured a friend's copy of leopard and the same problem occurs. The system was acquired from a local business that closed recently and sold off it's stuff which is how I came into possession of the system. I find myself wondering if it is a problem with the motherboard and since the system used to be for business purposes perhaps there is some sort of block or lockout on the mobo that's preventing an installation. Any help would be much appreciated. You can find my other posting on another forum here : http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/app...tml#post871660 and maybe you guys can pickup on something they haven't.

Thanks.

Your Mac Pro might need to boot up from a more recent Leopard Install Disc than the one you're using there.
e.g. my 'older' Mac Pro would kernel if I boot it up from anything below 10.5.2 (not even its own installation discs) cause I had upgraded the graphics card and such requires that OS X build.

Safest thing would be to boot it up with the latest available OS X Leopard installation discs.

Besides that, do you any 3rd party hardware there?

the osx disc I'm using is the Mac OS X Leopard Install dvd version 10.5 22691-6037-A.

There's no 3d party hardware that I know of. There's only the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT graph card.

are you sure it's a version issue? That doesn't seem like it'd be a problem. There's no way there's some sort of programming lock on the mobo?

Yes, it can be an OS X version issue, that's what happens to my Mac Pro for the very same reason. If I try to start up the Mac Pro from a OS X 10.5 DVD, I got a kernel panic. Every time.

10.5 as 10.5.0, not even 10.5.2 right?, then it is the NVIDIA 8800GT, it is the same GPU I have here, my Mac Pro is the first revision so it would be able to boot with a 10.5.0 disc without any hassle if the Graphics Card inside it was the NVIDIA 7300GT, but since I had upgraded it to the NVIDIA 8800GT, I would need a 10.5.2 installation disc.

Yours being a newer Mac Pro would need to boot up from a OS X 10.5.1 disc minimum (if configured as it came from factory), but given you have the NVIDIA 8800GT you would need 10.5.2 or newer, cause that was the first OS X version to support the NVIDIA 8800 GT card.

All in all, I wouldn't be worried… try to get a 10.5.2 or newer OS X retail installation disc so you can confirm that is the issue here.

If you live near an Apple Store, it wouldn't hurt to go in with your older discs and ask if you can swap them for a newer revision of the OS.

I've done it on two occasions, and the store manager just gave me a brand new retail copy for trade with my old Leopard discs for free. At the very most they might charge you $20.
