My first generation aluminum iMac is great. The only thing that bugs me is that when I wake it up, it can take from 30 seconds to more than a minute before my browser, email, or any app can connect to my LAN. The LAN is fine-my wife's MacBook is online practically before she's finished opening the lid.
Is this something about the iMac, or is it something to do with OS X (I'm running Leopard and up to date) that I'm just not aware of?

My clamshell iBook does pretty much the same thing, although it flat-out won't get a reliable wifi connection until I manually redo the connection entirely.

That's interesting. I have WiFi turned on, but I also have it wired, and that's what I typically depend on. I wonder if having both enabled is causing an issue...

It looks like it was a DNS issue. I had the iMac set up with a manual address for Ethernet, and there was a single old DNS server address in the configuration. Worse, for AirPort there was NO DNS server. Now I have my ISP's current addresses (two of them), then an OpenDNS server set up for both, and it is no longer slow at all.

OK, not so fast. After a couple of wake ups with quick connections, I'm back to waiting at least 30 seconds for a connection. I don't think this is an issue with the iMac, so I'm going to start a new thread in Networking to see what folks there might have to suggest.

In my case it was the router. I had a crappy d-link, and it took forever.
Now I have a Linksys, and it takes less than ten seconds.

Is your iMac set to remember the network it has previously joined? (Network - AirPort - Advanced)

It was doing this wired. I had both Ethernet and AirPort enabled, and that may have been something of a problem. I've disabled AirPort and now it seems to connect much more quickly via Ethernet. I have a thread in Networking about this issue, and I think I have it pretty much covered now, but thanks for the suggestion.
