Ordered and received the ATI 4870 video card upgrade from Apple and read the included instructions. In lifting up the plastic card release tab at the end of the PCI express slot to release the ATI 2600 video card the plastic tab broke off and fell down into the machine. I was able to remove the old card and install the new one without other problems. The new card seems to be working well.

Should I be concerned about this broken release tab and the plastic piece which has fallen who knows where? I have Apple care on the Mac Pro and there is an Apple store in the area.

It's not conductive, so it won't short anything. But it could jam a fan. Depending on size, it might be able to block airflow somewhere, but that's a long shot. Reasonable answer: it's probably not worth worrying about.

Personal answer: having a loose part rattling around inside my Mac would prove quite a motivation. I'd take the power supply apart if I had to, to get that sucker out of my baby.

In-between answer: a broken-off PCIe release tab may decrease the resale value. If it's under AppleCare, I'd take it in. Peace of mind that the loose part is found, and maintenance of resale value.

All I can think of is the latest song I've been listening to "Shake It". But I don't think it's a good idea to shake it. How about putting it upside down or on it's side. Open side down on the table. Hmmmm....

It's surprising to hear that the release tabs would be that flimsy.

I too broke my tab when I upgraded by MacPro to a nVidia 8800GT. It's not that the tab is flimsy, it's that is so dang rigid. I pushed and pushed and the card would not come out...eventually the tab snapped. Oops, no worries though, my MacPro isn't moved so the card shouldn't become unseated.

one of mine broke when taking my card out to clean it. :/

oh well, i don't really plan on selling it anyway. whenever the time comes to get a new machine, this one will either turn into a server or be given to my dad.
