I posted about this awhile ago and didn't get any replies - I was going to let it go as just a strange occurance but it's happened again.

Tonight in my finder window, there was an additional icon underneath "Network" and "Macintosh HD". It's name was simply "." . I took a screenshot of the inspector details, you can see it at puppytoes.net/images/drive.gif. This only showed up in my finder window, not on my desktop. When I clicked the eject next to the icon in the finder, nothing happened. The only way to get rid of it was to restart.

I saw it again later (a little while after I restarted)when I was printing a page to pdf from Firefox - a screenshot of the window is at puppytoes.net/images/savewindow.gif
Even though it was there in the save window, it was not present in the Finder or on my desktop.

I looked at the finder prefs and the icon looks like the "connected servers" icon but I'm not connected to any servers that I'm aware of.

I'm thoroughly confused - is this something I should be worrying about? Any info or help would be appreciated.

That odd, never seen this before myself. I take it this is a home computer? Do you have any other computers in your home that would be running in the same network.

Not that it would solve it right away, have you tried to Flush your DNS. Here is a easy Flsuh DNS utility rather than the terminal commands.

Worth a try

Hm. It looks like someone has opened a network share from your own computer. This might be a bad thing, or it might be absolutely nothing. First, let's verify that it isn't a Finder bug.

When you see that icon, open a terminal window - it's an application in your Utilities folder, which is inside your Applications folder. Type

cd /Volumes

and then

ls -lA

into that window. Write EXACTLY as I did, we are case sensitive here. You should now see a listing of all connected drives. Look for a drive that looks like it's name is . - it should be right at the top. Do you see one? If so, it is not a Finder bug.

In UNIX, the directory named . is the current directory, while .. is the parent directory. Those never show up in the Finder. It is a common trick to try to hide stuff by naming them something very similar to . or .. - most likely its name is . with a spacebar after it. This tells me someone is trying to hide that share from view. I don't know why, obviously, but it's suspicious.
The low-end Mac Pro is the most overpriced Mac since the IIvx
