I can neither get Command+Option+R+P ... or O+F to work? The desktop simply reloads. I have my fingers down well before the Boing! ?? I have an ext. HD that will not appear/load. Any thoughts? Thanks.

For command-option-p-r, you have to keep holding them down until you hear the boot chime at least twice. The machine will reboot a second time.

Ya, I understand Steve ...but it marches by that; rather than chiming again the desktop opens as usual. If I keep the keys down - I get like a bell ringing telling me to Let Up Dude! ...I never get the second, or more, chime.

One of my HD suppliers FAQ's said to Cmd+Opt+O+F (I also tried Zero..) to open a command line to reset to the defaults, but that does not work either - desktop opens as usual. I'm on a new Alum. mac keyboard via USB. Confusing...?!

It's partially the keyboard. I was getting no response (but am able to type all day) on the new, fancy, thin Alum one. I was able to get this old clicker - from a Bondi Blue gumball iMac - to make Cmd+Opt+O+R re-ring the gong. I was not able to reset the NVRAM via command using Cmd+Opt+O+F...?! And I'm still stuck on getting my Firewire drives to load...
