I have an old 20-inch LCD iMac (with dead video ram) I'd like to make use of instead of chucking it out. Has anyone used the internal HD from one of these as an external HD by putting it in a case made for such a use? Was it worth the trouble? Was it a lot of work? Any tips gratefully received.

You don't mention which exact iMac you have, but a hard drive can always be taken out of an old machine and used in a case. Check out the guides at iFixit for details on taking your machine apart. If it's not listed there (older machines), you can probably find the manual at Apple's site.
