I just bought a second hand G5 Dual 2.3Ghz machine and installed the airport card from my powerbook. The card is showing up with full signal (even though it is greyed out) in the bar at the top. Unfortunately, It cannot see any available connections. Usually, I can see at least 5 or six on my street. I have looked for firmware updates etc but still have the same problem.

Did you try putting the network name & details in manually? I've seen that happen a few times, when it can't see a desired network, but connects right away after getting the details.

do you have the stupid airport "T" connector that came with the G5? And if you did, did you install it?

If not:
good luck trying to get any signal. I have a G5 tower as well and the thing acted as if wireless internet had never existed. The G5 tower has terrible reception without the "T" add on or some other third party antenna.

That "T" is the antenna. No antenna, no signal.

Every Power Mac G5 that needs an antenna came with one in the box (regardless of whether AirPort was installed or not). So if you got the full accessory kit with the G5, you should have the antenna.

is your DP2.3 an AGP or PCIe based system? for instance, the PCIe based system has no external antenna, they built it into the case. this model also doesn't use the card from the laptop, even though i believe it has the same connector. if you have the PCIe model, you need to get the AP/BT combo card. do you see 2 wires with round connectors on the end near where you installed the card?

even without the antenna, you should see SSIDs nearby. I've run my older dual 2.5 without its antenna for months with no issue, and full signal strength.

and as far as having full signal greyed out, that's just how the airport symbol looks when it's not connected to a network.

hope this info helps!

without the antenna a G5 PowerMac will see local SSID's but will generally fail to connect or if it does it will drop the signal pretty quickly. My 2.7dual sits around 2 metres from my wireless router. It sees the network but without the t piece it wont connect.

wonder what's different about the different generations. tested it without the T once again, still no network problems, wireless signal is on a different floor even. only one less bar of signal. weird.
