by some stroke of luck, wiggling the 8 RAM cards in one of my G5 towers has brought it back from the dead, right before I ordered a new power supply for it. Aren't computers great?

I like inexpensive solutions.

btw, it was probably the pair of sticks closest to the CPU that were not being recognized. A later pair would not be recognized, but you would still boot based on the earlier RAM. I'd check System Profiler to confirm that all RAM slots are showing as populated.

I used to have a problem with that ALL the time with a G5 at my old school. It was a pain, but better than something huge frying.

yea, it worked perfectly for years, and then one day it started shutting off randomly. it was very weird, it would run for days, then next time it would get turned on it would run for hours, then minutes, then not getting past the apple screen, then not turning on at all. but, leaving it alone for a few days, and it would work in bursts like that again. then it finally stopped turning on at all. that's why i thought it was the power supply giving out all this time!
