Hey guys, my 2.5DP (June 2004) has started having an issue where it will randomly power off without warning or provocation. It even went a few months without powering on at all. Strangely, wiggling the RAM revived it from that coma but a few days later it did it again. Do you think it is the 600W power supply, or something else?

Look over your motherboard, paying attention to the capacitors. Note if any show bulging on top (the tops should be perfectly flat) or brown leakage. ref Capacitor Plague

If it were bad capacitors, the power supply is a more likely place to look. But it's rather hard to inspect in a PowerMac G5.

Sigh. The power supply on these is also shockingly prone to early death. It's a pain to get out as you need to dismantle the Mac, removing the processors (among other things). It's unlikely to be bad capacitors as that seems to be one problem that G5's didn't suffer from so much. There was an Apple recall programme for PSU's but it's over now.

It's quite easy to grow to hate G5 powermacs.

The repair extension is over for G5 iMacs. An extension remains in effect for some PowerMac G5 models.

yes, as i've mentioned in other threads. regardless, the REP for the power mac PSU is only referring to the 700w and 1000w models, not the 600w in the dual 2.5. i'm screwed either way. i've tried to get apple to CS code it a few times with no luck. at least the processors are easy to pull, i built my first g5 from a pile of parts so i'm pretty familiar with them. ironically, that one (which i sold) works way better to this day than either of my 2 current G5s! it is possible to get the PSU out without removing the board, that saves a lot of time. not as bad as it could be it just sucks how much those things cost. but, that's the beauty of apple, i could sell this 4 year old machine (working) for about as much as i spent building my core 2 quad w/ 1gb gts 250 future hackintosh!

ok so regardless of the REP, has anyone else had this issue? i wish i had more parts to test with. i've left it off and unplugged for a few days, so when i go plug it in and fire it up in a moment it should probably work fine, at least for a while.
