Run Disk Utility and verify your disk's filesystem. Make sure your HDD is OK, then give it another go.
If it still fails, try making a new user and doing the same thing under a new user account.
If it still fails under a new user, boot from your system disk holding down the D key. Run an extended hardware test to verify that it isn't a hardware problem.
