I'm planning on picking up the i7 iMac in the near future but have a question about the ram. It comes by default with 4GB of ram (2x2GB), is it possible to add two 4GB cards in the remaining two slots for a total of 12GB? Or do all the ram have to be the same?

Any help would be appreciated...

I'd be looking to purchase these unless anyone has anything better to suggest: 8.0GB (4.0GB + 4.0GB Kit) PC-8500 DDR3... (OWC8566DDR3S8GP) at OWC

Thanks!

What you want to do should work just fine. The RAM you have chosen is the right type, too. However, it's overpriced.

Newegg has 2x4GB Crucial for $399 shipped. And if you go no-name (still comes with a warranty though) you can get it for as low as $382 shipped.

^ Seconded, although I'd go with the $399 Crucial. $17 more isn't that much for an item that's almost $400, and I'd rather have a good brand when it comes to something like RAM that can make your computer kernel panic if it flakes out.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Thanks for the help. I guess the $399 Crucial is what I'm looking for.

Out of curiosity, I once heard that you could only use matching RAM sticks. Is that not applicable anymore?

I really appreciate the info.

It's true to varying degrees. In general you want to install in pairs, but not all the pairs need be identical.

Good choice. That's what I'd get.

You install matched pairs, but you don't have to match all your sticks.
