I have an eMac with 10.3.9, and have a 10.4 Tiger DVD, but no DVD drive on this computer. I do have a DVD that works just fine for anything, but I cannot get the emac to accept this DVD drive as the boot drive to load 10.4 from the DVD. I can both see and select it as a Startup Disk in System preferences, however, even after locking out further changes, the DVD with 4,0 folder does not stay selected. After selecting it and hitting restart, it askes if you are sure, yes, restart, are you sure, yes, restart, are you sure... Okay, selecting and choose retsart elsewhere. No, it restarts using 10.3 folder. Okay. Suggestions?... other than get a new Mac. Thanks.

I don't think the eMac can boot via USB2, even with a hack. However, if you're adventurous, there is this page.

Boot PowerPC Macs via USB 2.0 drives - Mac OS X Hints

It can boot via Firewire though. Do you have a Firewire Mac or FW drive?

EDIT:

What I mean by Firewire Mac is if you have a second Mac with Firewire and a DVD drive, you can boot that second Mac to target mode by holding "T" when booting up. Doing that turns the machine into a Firewire hard drive and a Firewire DVD drive. You can then put the Tiger disc in the DVD drive and boot off of it.

I called a couple friends, but we are all old duds and nobodys has a mac with a Firewire drive. Using the other Mac as a FW drive is a neat idea though. Thanks

Note that the instructions on that page contain an error. The correct keys to hold down during boot to reach Open Firmware are:

Command-Option-O-F

The part about USB wasn't in the message itself, but it was in the title.
