Greetings, I am trying to use my new Toshiba HDTV as a monitor for my iMac. I have an HDMI cable going from the TV to a converter into the mini dvi port of my iMac. Problem? No image on TV. I've read the manual with the TV...no help. Are you fabulous enough to help me?

What's the resolution of the TV? What output resolution from the iMac are you using?

Start with 720p (1280x720 @ 60 Hz) from the iMac just for testing purposes, and if that works then it may be that some of your settings may be wrong the way you tried it before.

OK I have an image but it's half off the TV screen. Not centered in other words. Also no sound even though it's an HDMI cable. We're getting there I think with your help.

What OS are you using? Snow Leopard has a standard 720p setting built-in. It should work. The 1080i setting in Snow Leopard should also work.

You won't get sound, because DVI does not support sound output.

TVs often have two settings for the HDMI port - they're called "PC" and "DTV" on mine. It should be set to PC. After that try running the auto-config on the TV.
The low-end Mac Pro is the most overpriced Mac since the IIvx

You shouldn't need a PC setting for the 720p and 1080i modes.

I'm using OSX 10.5.8 Damn so now I have to get sound? Seems to me lots of folk are having problems with getting a TV monitor image and something different works for everyone. If only I didn't hate the cable TV company monopoly so much.

Yeah, 10.5 doesn't have proper HDTV support. It works inconsistently.

10.6 was plug-and-play for me however.

No, but in my case I did. The Bluray and the receiver work either way, but the PC display was off to the side with the original DTV setting.
