I have a Dual 1Ghz G4 MDD that I have set up in a dual boot configuration (OS9 on OSX). I had to do a hack install of OS9 not having the original restore CD. I was able to obtain the latest Mac OS ROM (9.5.1) and Sound Extension (2.2) from Norton Utilities so I can utiltize the ATA-100 bus and enable the sound card, but am still having an issue with the System Profiler being able to determine the processor type. It sees that is has a 1000Mhz processor and that there are 2 of them, but the processor type field states "unknown type" versus "G4 Power PC" as it does on my old Powermac. Does anyone know if there is another system file I need for the System Profiler to recognize the CPU type? Thanks!

You can get later versions of the ROM and Apple System Profiler from the Classic install packages of later Macs. Apple stopped updating OS 9 for bootability on later G4 / all G5 systems, but they did continue to quietly develop the files that Classic uses.

Latest versions:
Mac OS ROM 10.2.1
Sound Manager {extension} 3.7.1
Apple System Profiler 2.6.5

That's very intersting! Could be it's the dated version of the "System Profiler" I'm using, or a combination of the Mac OS ROM version. I believe the OS 9 CD that shipped with the Powermac MDD had the non-disclosed updates you spoke of. I'll have to scout around. At least I know the latest versions available now. Thanks for the response!

Found the files you spoke of off a Tiger OS 9 Classic support package and now the System Profiler and all else works perfectly!

Hi, I'm having a similar problem with a G4 MDD I bought recently without any original install disks. I've got two versions of OS X on different partitions (10.2.8 & 10.4.11) and OS 9.2.2 which I cobbled together from a 9.0.4 install disk from an older G4 Gigabit Ethernet model and applied the 9.1, 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 updates to. It boots up fine into all three, but in OS 9 there's no sound (apart from the initial bong at startup). I've read all over the forums that the MDD model has different sound chips (Texas Instruments?) and needs the special sound driver extension which only came with the original disks. Not a lot of help if you haven't got them. Apple don't sell them any more and I can't find any on eBay etc. Is your sound working ok now? Where exactly did you get the extension from please, as I'd like to buy a copy too. I have an old Norton Utilities disk dated 2000, which worked on my old G4, but won't even boot on the MDD. It has OS 9.0.4 on it, with no mention of a sound extension. If you got yours from a later version of Norton, I might try to find a copy of that, as I'm having no luck tracking down any original install disks. Thanks.

Call AppleCare {USA: 1-800-APL-CARE} {UK: (44) 0844 209 0611 - 5p per minute} and ask about replacement original disks. Apple will call them "fulfillment disks". You need your computer's serial number first - they will ask for it, to look up the discs it came with.

They'll charge $15-20 per replacement disc, and there will be 2-3 CDs. The 'System Restore' and 1-2 'System Install' discs. The OS 9 stuff will be hiding on the Install CD, or on the 2nd Install CD if there are two. The Restore CD might or might not have a copy of the OS 9 files - it's meant for quickly restoring things to the factory install.

If Apple refuses to sell you the discs for your older PowerMac, you may have luck on bittorrent.

OWC or MacSales might be able to help, too. They sell a lot of "fulfillment" disks.
He can be fixed -- you can't.

Do they still offer stuff like that? OWC used to sell used copies of all previous OS X versions. But that sales page went away sometime around when Leopard came out.

Hmmm - no luck with Apple Care, they said my model is too old and they don't support it any more. I've just sent OWC a request to see if they can help, keeping my fingers crossed. I've seen lots of OS X install disks on eBay, but none for this particular model. Couldn't find any on BitTorrent. Thanks for the tips though, I've not given up yet! Will let you know how I get on...

Correct me if I'm wrong but FW800 models did not support dual boot, make sure you don't have a firewire 800.
I found this torrent but I don't know for sure if it will work.9.2.2 torrent I am DL'ing it to find out on my single 1.25 though.

Ok that one didn't have all the necessary drivers, but it did boot, it was missing audio drivers hardware graphics drivers and cd drivers, maybe hard drive drivers hard to say because I had it on the ata-66 bus not the ata-100 bus. So YMMV.

MadMacMan66, there's an install disc for Classic support on Tiger that had the latest sound extension that did the trick for my MDD G4. Or it may be on the Norton Utilities 6 CD too. Let me double check.

It's not on the Norton Utilities 6 CD. You need the Classic install disc for Tiger. I have the extensions backed up if you can't find them. Also the latest System Profiler which your Mac needs to recognize the Dual G4 processor properly.

Thanks for trying to help. I've given up now, it was just too much hassle. I've scrapped the MDD for spares and bought an older G4-450 single cpu model which is much better, albeit slower. Triple boot OS9, OSX and Yellow Dog Linux 4.1 - perfect. Why don't they make them like this any more?!?!?!
