Hello:

I thought this would be easy---I want to plug my single prong stereo wire from my old iMac lucite globe speakers (came with the iMac igloo) into a device with a 3.5 mm hole. The problem is that the female end (where the 2.5mm speaker plug) fits MUST have a recess to accomodate the lip on the iMac plug. Can't find it so far---searched online, went to Radio Shack, went to local Apple Store. Please advise. Thanks.

I think those are specialized speakers, designed to work only with the G4 iMac. I don't think you'll have much luck using them with anything else.

No, actually, they're ordinary speakers.

The problem is that they are UNPOWERED speakers.

Meaning, you need to hook them up to a power amplifier to get anything more than a barely audible skritchy noise.

That is what set the iMac G4 apart, and why the jack is different - the iMac G4 had a power amp built-in that's capable of driving external speakers.

If you want to use these speakers with a different system, you'll need a powered amp - the only ready-made solution that was ever available was the Griffin iFire, and that runs northwards of $150 on eBay (it hasn't been made in years).

In other words: the speakers are almost useless.
