I just bought an emac with loads of great free software and running 10.4 . Got all my email and word docs etc loaded then about a week after while i was using it the screen flickered then went off. No advance warning or anything.
I suppose actually it was a bit flickery sometimes but if I put the resolution and colours down it was fine.
Are these expensive to repair cos sadly you can buy them for about £50 - 100 these days
thanks

A new screen for an eMac is not going to be worthwhile. If you can find a good one you'll probably actually end up buying the eMac around it since they are a pain (and very dangerous) to remove. So you would likely end up just migrating to the new(er) eMac.

A screen by itself will be around £30 but fitting would be well over £100 probably nearer £150.

Remove the hard drive and put it in an external case.

Or what about turning on while holding T for Firewire Target Disk Mode?

Tried that made no diference.
I read a lot about how complex ( and dangerous!) it is to work on these. i appreciate its an old faahion crt with condensers etc so its been unplugged abot week now
Assuming its now totally discharged is it just a case of pulling it apart.
Is there something basic like a fuse??
Thanks

you can buy a tool to discharge the capacitor safely, however not a lot of places will sell you one as you can easily kill yourself using it and they won't risk the law suit. You can find how to build one online if you look.

Try the fire wire again, if the monitors gone then you won't see the symbol on the screen but the disk should mount up when connected. If you get nothing then I would suggest that it's your psu not the screen that is the issue.

HI hadnt realised you were this was your business!
Sorry to sound dim but when you say mount up - does that mean the computer starts up and sounds like it has booted up and gone to home screen ( if i could see it!)
it sounds like its doing that ok. The cd ejector button works and things like that.
Does the capacitor hold charge for weeks on end as its been unplugged for about 2 weeks so wondered if its still dangerous to meddle.
thanks

Take one firewire 400 cable and connect the eMac to any other firewire equipped Mac. Hold the t key down and start the eMac. The eMacs hard drive should appear on the desktop of the other Mac as an external firewire drive. You can then copy across all your files. If the Mac will start (but the screen is off) then this is the best way to get your data off the eMac.

Yes the capacitor holds its charge for up to several weeks after last use. If the Mac starts up but the screen is blank this could still be charging the capacitor up each time you switch the Mac on.
