OK, background....

2006 Mac Pro Dual 3.0 dual core xeon
X1900XT is stock card

I bought a 3870 and placed in slot 1 (It drives a 30" and a 23" apple display)

I was happy until someone gave me a 21" flat screen and I tried to put in the X1900XT, if I recall it only fits in slot 3/4 well, either way it is in slot 3. I have not tried moving it slots.

I have expansion utility to run slot 1 at 16X and slot 3 at 1X. If I try to change it to Slot 1 at 16 X and slot 3 at 4X and reboot, the X1900XT fan runs wide open and no display at all from the card. I have looked everywhere for documentation that the card only runs at 1X, 16X etc, but seems to me, I have found people running it at 4X. Am I forgetting something, am I insane or just a little crazy?

I like the 3870 and I want a second card that can run 3D stuff also. Even with SMC fan control and everything on high the 1900 will shutdown on heat (I assume on heat anyway) It does run fine for everything but 3 screen 3d gaming stuff

What are my options?
Will the 3870 be ok at 8X (Driving the 30" and 23" displays) and try the 1900 at 8X in slot 4?
Another video card that I can perhaps try?

Thanks for your help
