This past summer i build my mom her first computer. I found a imac G3 600mhz real cheap locally. Since she liked the orange colour i took the outer shell from the 400mhz orange imac and put it on the Grey 600mhz imac G3. I updated the fireware (actually it was already done from previous owner) and installed a new 80gig hard drive replacing the original 20 gig drive. I installed OS X.4.6 from my old retail disk (all my other macs now run OS X.5 so no longer used OS X.4) and the install went fine and the computer ran fine with 512megs of ram. I went to install all the apple updates and when it was done and installed up to OS X.4.11 rebooted the computer would hang in the boot mood for up to 30 mins before i shut it down. I zapped pram ect and tried again still no boot. So i reformatted the drive and tried again. I updated everything but the OS and still worked fine. So i installed OS X.4.10 and it worked fine. So i tried OS X.4.11 again and it was back to were i started not working. So right now I am using OS X.4.10 on it and it runs fine! But Safari and newer itunes supports min of OS X.4.11 to run. I am kinda at a lose i even tried booting from external drive running OS X.4.11 and it does not work but works fine booted from external in OS X.4.10 - I have no idea why this is happening. OS X.4.11 runs fine on a old 400mhz blue and white but will not run on a newer faster imac. Others having problems with OS X.4.11? I want to get some suggestions before attempting to update again. It is kinda frustrating to have someone use a computer for first time and have it not fully work. I would get her a newer one but she is really keen on the looks and the feel of the old imacs. I really do not want to use firefox or such. I loaded safari the other day and now it says incomparable browser. I worked with macs for years and this is really stumping me.

maybe your computer only goes to 10. if so it won't go to 11. maybe you will never have that "extra push."

You were joking, right gooser? (Just wondering. . .)
There's no reason why a Tiger capable Mac wouldn't be able to run 10.4.11 but would be able to run 10.4.10. But does it really matter? There's so little difference between those two releases I don't see why it should be of any concern.

Look up a movie called "Spinal Tap".

As per the OP, 10.4.10 won't run Safari or a late-version iTunes.

Try downloading and using the 10.4.11 Combo Update from Apple's support website. The combos have sometimes solved assorted problems, especially since the updates you get from Software Update are often machine-specific.
Since you've mixed and matched some Mac parts here, you may need the Combo to be sure of getting all OS components updated.
