I need to transfer files from a emac where the monitor has gone onto my good one.
Is it a firewire 400 male to male connector I need?

yes it is. Depending on the mac you are connecting to you will need either a 400 to 400 or a 400 to 800 cable. Both are easily available. Newer Macs have only firewire 800 hence the need for and adapter cable.
