Power mac g5 dual 2.0g cpu not booting up due to what seemed to be a dead hard drive. However it passes apple hardware test. SATA controller is missing when checking system profiler after CD boot.

Got another HD for testing? AHT may omit the controller if there is nothing connected - ie, if the HD bricked, it may not read at all.

It turned out not to be the hard drive. Question 2, will it boot from a 3rd party controller? I know Macs can be picky about this if its not native.

Yes, G5s can boot from 3rd party controllers. But most don't support booting. You have to dig through the controller feature descriptions to find the few that do, such as some Firmtek cards.

It would help if you could tell us the exact G5 you have. There were four different "dual 2.0" G5s, with PCI, PCI-X, and PCIe expansion slots.

Your G5 has PCI-X slots. It will work with most PCI cards, but true PCI-X cards will be faster.

According to OWC, you have 5 controllers that support booting:

$64 FirmTek SeriTek/1S2 PCI (SATA 150 - 2 internal ports, no port multiplier)
$74 Sonnet Tempo Serial ATA PCI (SATA 150 - 2 internal ports, no port multiplier)
$120 FirmTek SeriTek/1V4 PCI-X (SATA 150 - 4 internal ports, no port multiplier)
$138 FirmTek SeriTek/1EVE4 PCI-X (SATA 150 - 4 external ports, no port multiplier)
$179 FirmTek SeriTek/2SE4 PCI-X (SATA2 300 - 4 external ports, port multiplier capable)

The first two are the same in terms of features and speed. The three PCI-X cards will be faster.
