I have a eMac with 10.5.8. I recently upgraded to 10.5.8 and when I did that my hard drive wont show up on my desktop. Before I upgraded it was showing up and it was working fine. I have a Maxtor OneTouch II. I contacted Maxtor and they gave me the new software for the upgrade but they said if it doesnt show up on your desktop it has to be a problem with my os or something.

Open up Disk Utility while your HDD is connected, does it show up in there?

Do you have another computer you can plug it into?

That makes it hard to troubleshoot. Maybe some other members have some ideas.

Boot from Leopard (and Tiger if you have it) install DVDs. Jump to Disk Utility in each. Is the external drive visible from either or both? If it's visible in either, then you're looking at an OS incompatibility. Possibly something messed up in your current installation.

Stick the DVD in your computer, then restart and hold the C key until you see the Apple logo.

Select a language. I think there's a Tools menu, from there you can select Disk Utility.

It is quite a few steps further in before it would erase anything. Just select the language, then ignore the next Installer choices. Instead, go to the menu bar. Usually they're in the Tools menu - it will allow you to jump over to Disk Utility. So long as you don't tell Disk Utility to do anything either, nothing will be done to your hard drives.
