My G5 computer (1.8 GHz) fails early in the boot process. The light flashes 3 times. I have tried resetting the PRAM, the PMU switch, and reinstalling the memory, but nothing seems to work. Do you have any suggestions?

I'm sorry byf - according to this Apple forum discussion thread it sounds like your motherboard could be at fault. The symptoms you report sound very similar if not identical to what's being discussed in that thread. It's worth a try to see if any of the slots are still functional by pulling all RAM except for one matched pair and then installing them in the proper slot pairs, but if this just started spontaneously the outlook for your board isn't promising.

(Remember that the G5 requires matched pairs installed in matched slots. RAM gets installed in the first slot on one side and then the corresponding slot on the other side, instead of filling the first two consecutive slots you see.)

3 flashes usually means either incompatible RAM types, unmatched pairs, or no RAM pairs passed startup diagnostics.

How many sticks are installed, and in which slots?

If you have ram in different sizes check the slots. The RAM pairs need to be matching, BUT the two banks of slots actually mirror each other so the top slot in the top bank must matcghing the bottom slot in the bottom bank. It's easy to get your RAM modules installed in the wrong order.

However, it could very well be a logic board fault that produces the symptom of bad ram to the POST routines.
