I am new to this board and I would appreciate your help.

I have a macbook pro 13" with 298 GB of space (according to OmniDisk Sweeper). About 40 GB disappeared in the last 24 hours.

When I run OmniDiskSweeper (a recommendation I found on this Board), it tells me the following in the drive list: 252 GB used; however, in the drive list it only finds 218 GB.

I have repaired the disk and still can't find this space. I am worried that perhaps a virus has snuck in. But I used ClamXav on the Documents and Desktop and it has found no virus.

Your help would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

A virus is unlikely. If Omni Disk Sweeper can't see the missing space, then it's somewhere your user account doesn't have access to. Log is as the root user, and run ODS again.

Figured it out! Thank you very much for your help.

Seems like a new partial volume had been created when I was using Superduper for backing up.

I learnt a lot very quickly thanks to your help. More importantly I felt relieved hearing from an expert.

Many thanks.
