I have two old powermac g3s (blue&white)
I tried to install OS9 - but it said I needed to update the systems firmware
I tried to do so - but it said "cant move neccesary files to hard disk as it is locked"
I also tried to Install OSX - I formated the hard disk with disk utility
but when It came to installing OSX it had an exclamation mark next to the hard disk and said 'you cannot install OSX on this volume"
Could this be something to do with the jumper setting on the hard drive?

Have you got a retail copy of MacOS 8.6? According to this Mac OS 8 and 9 compatibility with Macintosh computers a B&W PM G3 will accept 8.6.
Strange it requires a firmware upgrade for MacOS 9.x, but that may be true. I can't remember that far back. I did have a B&W G3 wayyyyy back when they were new.

What exact versions of MacOS 9 and MacOS X were you trying to install? Especially with MacOS 9, the version can make a difference sometimes. Are these retail versions of MacOS, or versions that came with a Mac? MacOS disks that came with a computer (usually grey in color) are usually specific to that Mac model and may not install on other Macs.

How big is the hard drive, and what version of OS X did you try to install?
The firmware update is to improve PCI performance. It doesn't seem to be necessary for any OS version. You'll want it even if you don't add any PCI cards, since the graphics card runs in a PCI slot.
Any retail version of OS 9 should work fine, along with OS 8.5.1 or later. Any retail OS X should work through Tiger. If you've replaced the hard drive with a bigger one, then OS X needs to be installed in the first 8 GB of the drive. ie - partition the bigger drive so there is an 8 GB (or smaller) partition at the beginning for booting OS X, followed by partition(s) for data. I seem to recall that this issue did not affect OS 8/9.
Edit: wrong G3 - the struck out advice is for a beige G3.
