Thinking of picking up a 27" refurb. But am wondering if Apple really has addressed the yellowing issue (hardware) or the cracking issue (packaging).

What do you guys/gals think?

They were both packaging, I think - the yellowing was a certain film coming loose, and likely also due to the boxes being tossed around.

I haven't seen any reports on either issue recently, and some of the more alarmist reports from back then have since been proven to be false (someone should call the SEC about that one, actually, it did affect the stock price a bit) so I think you're safe.
The low-end Mac Pro is the most overpriced Mac since the IIvx
