I have a CD 1.66 Mini with a failed DVD drive. Since the Apple DVD player will not playback movies from and external player, I need to replace the internal one. Does anyone know if I need to have a specific model for the Apple DVD player app to work with it even if it is internal?

Since when does Apple DVD Player not work with an external DVD drive?

I have an external DVD burner (Pioneer) hooked to my Mac Pro and I can play DVD movies on it in DVD Player just fine. It is connected via Firewire, though so that could be the reason...

Yeah, AFAIK DVD Player works just fine with third party drives, but there could be exceptions I suppose.

DVD Player should make use of any internal drive you fit. The drivers for reading discs are utterly generic, a PowerMac G3 will read from pretty much any DVD drive you can hook to it (May not have enough power to decode a DVD movie). Its burning discs which is the trickier issue. If you want to be able to do that, check the drive compatibility database on XLR8yourmac.com.
MacBook 2.0GHz CD; MacBook Pro 15" 2.4GHz Late '08; PowerMac G4 MDD Dual 1GHz; 3x Xserve G4 1GHz; Mac Mini 2GHz; Big pile of broken and working bits;
