My G5 is quiet, but aside from that the Mac Pros have had few noise complaints.

I too would like to know how noisy the current PowerMacs are. They're way overdue, so the specs should be impressive.

If you're meaning the Mac Pros...

...I'm currently sitting in a very quiet room with two of them and the loudest thing in the room is a LaCie external drive.
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.
That's where there's thunder... and the wind shouts back.

5Big mark 1. Fan noise mainly.

Dog slow though. Might have to upgrade to the mark 2.

Mine's on the desk about two feet away from me. Remarkably quiet. Much quieter than the G5 under the desk.

The old G5's were extremely loud and ran very hot. Mine was the liquid-cooled 2.5 GHz quad (which by the way fried just after the 3 year applecare expired). It was practically a nuclear furnace. The newer Intel versions are much cooler and quieter. Still, while relatively quieter compared to the old G5's, I'd never call them "quiet" in an absolute sense.

I have four hard drives in my 2008 Mac Pro, which actually produce most of the more annoying noise. The choice of a graphics card also influences noise. My hot and loud old 8800 fried, and my replacement 5770 is far quieter as well as nicely faster too. (See the trend here? Hot and loud = prematurely fried.)

An Imac will be significantly quieter, and much more so if you have a solid-state disk in it. The hard disk in mine produces more noise and vibration than the fan does. I don't know what your usage is like, but if I wanted quiet, I'd get a high-end solid-state Imac over a Mac Pro.

Cheers.
