Hey everyone, I'm in a panic right now so I hope someone has some idea what's wrong. I've recorded with almost exclusively Garageband '06 on my iMac for 2 years with almost no problems, until now. I always use the audio input jack, with a 1/4" guitar cable and an 1/8" adaptor. I use this setup for guitars, bass, and keyboard when I'm not using MIDI.

Suddenly, however, when I attempt to play a guitar part, it comes out muffled, quiet, fuzzy-sounding, and with weird clipping and a lot of bottom end. I admit I haven't tested a keyboard or bass because I'm been frantically trying to figure out what's going on and it didn't occur to me until just now. I have tried multiple cables and guitars, and even tried plugging into my Toneport GX instead of the audio input jack. I thought this was an exclusive problem with Garageband, but it appears that it also happens in Riffworks, which leads me to believe there is some sort of audio input driver problem.

I have also tried switching between audio drivers in Garageband, and messing with the input volume setting. I will say that I think the problem may have come from me plugging a keyboard in earlier today, which did not originally have an input jack (I drilled a hole in the case and soldered one to the soundboard). This would seem like an obvious case of me frying something, but I've recorded with this keyboard several times before with no issues.

Again, if anyone has any idea it would be MUCH appreciated. Please let me know if an audio sample would help.

I forgot to mention that as far as I can tell, there are no problems with audio playback whatsoever.

Sounds more like a problem with your audio jack than the driver. I'd have your machine looked at by Apple.
